Kathryn, “Solace” is such a powerful title. Could you tell us about the inspiration behind this piece? Was there a particular moment or story that sparked the composition?
My piece “Solace” was written from a place within, empty of any preconceived ideas of what it would be, and let it “write itself” from visceral honesty. I wanted to invoke a heartfelt, soul searching sanctuary of empathy that reflects the complexities of humanity and the hope residing in those complexities.
In the context of the HOPE album, which is a message of support for war-affected children, how did you balance the heavy emotional themes of conflict with a sense of hope or healing in your piece?
Children are the most vulnerable in times of war and conflict and their vulnerability is often the “wake up call” needed to remind us of the importance and universal power of love, fellowship and compassion. Thematically I wanted the cello to be a featured voice in a range of emotions felt during chaos and compassion. The healing that erupts from raw emotion.
Did you use any specific musical motifs or techniques to evoke a feeling of comfort or refuge in “Solace”?
The orchestra provides the frame of this narrative with contemplative string orchestration and nuance. The cello cadenza in the middle of “Solace” is a keening cry of grief, release and ultimate relief through faith; culminating with an ascending melody and theme of triumph.
The London Symphony Orchestra recorded the album. What was it like hearing your composition come to life with such an iconic ensemble? Did the recording evolve in ways you didn’t expect?
Musically I’m in heaven having my composition performed by the incredible cellist Andreas Graf along with the award winning London Symphony Orchestra. Their combination of sensitivity and expertise elevate “Solace” to such a beautiful place; their interpretation is so pure and instantly impactful. More than hearing “Solace”; it is felt. I am honored that Andreas Graf and Maestro Ben Palmer asked me to be a part of this extraordinary production along with my esteemed colleagues.
If you could share one message through your piece “Solace”, what would you want it to be for those listening who might be experiencing difficult times?
The HOPE recording is a timely and important endeavor, and this outreach has brought us all together; both listeners and composers, to reflect on our choices and response to immensely challenging and changing times. I choose hope always, and I want this message and music to resonate and empower. We all have the capacity to be impactful in a positive way; no choice is too small.
Kathryn, thank you very much for the inteview.
